Wishlist with gift reservations: no more duplicate gifts

The most awkward gift situation isn’t getting “the wrong thing”. It’s getting the same thing twice. Two friends saw one sweater on your list, both bought it, and now you have to figure out how to return one without hurting anyone.
Reservations solve exactly this: whoever picks an item marks it, and everyone else sees it’s taken. Here’s how it works, and why in Wish1UP a reservation is always anonymous.
What a gift reservation is
A reservation is an “I’m buying this” mark on a specific item in someone else’s wishlist. Other people opening the same List see the item is already reserved and choose something else. So:
- no duplicates — each gift is bought by one person;
- no group chat about “who’s getting what”;
- the surprise stays — the person celebrating can’t see who picked what.
How to reserve an item in Wish1UP
- Open a List someone shared with you, by link or QR code.
- Pick an item and tap “Reserve”.
- Done: for everyone else, that item is now marked as reserved.
Changed your mind? Tap again — the reservation is removed and the item is free again.
Why reservations are anonymous
In Wish1UP a reservation isn’t tied to a name — only to the device it was made on. So the List owner never finds out who reserved an item, and other guests only see that it’s reserved, without a name.
This isn’t a setting you can switch off by accident; it’s how reservations are built. Finding out who reserved something is technically impossible.
Can the owner see that an item is reserved?
That’s the owner’s choice. When creating a List, there’s a “Show reserved items” switch:
- on — she sees what has been picked (but never who);
- off — she doesn’t even see that, and the surprise is complete.
This choice is made once, when the List is created, and can’t be changed later. So nobody can “peek” by flipping the setting before the big day.
When reservations help most
- Birthdays with guests from different circles — friends, colleagues, family.
- Weddings — a classic gift registry, without the awkward conversations.
- A new baby, christening, gender reveal — when relatives want to help and not buy five identical strollers.
- Christmas and New Year in a big family.
- Secret Santa with participants’ wishlists.
