What to gift someone who says they need nothing

“I don’t need anything” is the most popular answer to the gift question. And the least honest. People who “have everything” have what everyone has: worn-out things, hobbies they don’t want to spend on, and wishes they feel awkward saying out loud.

Why people say “nothing”

  • asking feels awkward — naming something feels like demanding it;
  • they don’t want you to spend — especially on something expensive;
  • they really haven’t thought about it — the wishes are there, nobody asked in time.

So the task isn’t to guess. It’s to make telling the truth easy.

1. Ask about a wishlist

Instead of “what should I get you?”, ask “do you have a wishlist?”. It removes the awkwardness: there’s nothing to invent on the spot, they just share a list they already made for themselves. If they don’t have one, suggest making it — it takes ten minutes.

2. Notice what they already save

  • what they show you — “look at this dress”;
  • what they complain about — “my headphones broke again”;
  • what they put off — a course, a trip, fixing a chair.

Write it down right away. A month later, you won’t remember.

3. Give an upgrade, not a thing

People who “have everything” often use old things because replacing them “isn’t urgent”. A good upgrade of something they use daily beats yet another trinket: quality towels or bedding, a mug from a local maker, a good kitchen knife, a proper wallet or laptop sleeve.

4. Give an experience

Experiences don’t take up shelf space: concert or theater tickets, a spa or photoshoot gift card, a pottery or cooking workshop, a weekend in another city, dinner at a place they’ve wanted to try.

5. Give time or help

Sometimes the most valuable thing isn’t bought: babysitting, help with a move, assembling furniture together. For busy people, that’s a gift they really “need”.

What to avoid

  • “something for the shelf” for someone already drowning in things;
  • clothes at random without the exact size and taste;
  • gifts “with a hint” — a gym membership or self-help books nobody asked for.

When several people are giving at once, a wishlist with reservations keeps you from buying the same thing — here’s how.
