Wishlist etiquette

Some people still find wishlists a bit cheeky: “you’re making a list of gifts for yourself?”. In fact it’s about care — for the people giving and for yourself. Like anything with gifts, there are unwritten rules. Here they are in one place.

Is it okay to have a wishlist?

Yes. A wishlist isn’t a demand, it’s a hint. People who want to make you happy find it easier when they don’t have to guess.

Rules for the one making the list

Add things at different prices. Not everyone can give a new phone, and that’s fine. With small things, mid-range items and big dreams, everyone finds something in their budget.

Be specific. “Nice headphones” is a riddle. “These, in black” with a link is an answer. Being specific isn’t fussy — it respects the giver’s time.

Share it when asked. A wishlist answers “what should I get you?”. Sending it to everyone, including people who weren’t planning to give, is pressure.

The exception is a shared occasion everyone attends with gifts anyway: a birthday party, a wedding, a new baby. A link in the group chat is fine there.

Don’t check who bought what. The point of a surprise is not knowing. In Wish1UP it’s built in: reservations are anonymous, and even you won’t know who picked what.

Say thank you for any gift — even one that’s not from the list.

Rules for the one giving

The list isn’t a cage. Take an idea from it and add something of your own: a card, favorite sweets, special wrapping.

Reserve when several people are giving, so two people don’t buy the same thing. More in “Wishlist with gift reservations”.

Don’t comment on prices. If something’s too expensive, just pick something else.

How to ask without feeling awkward

  • “If you’re wondering what to get me, here’s my list — there’s something for every budget.”
  • “So you don’t have to rack your brain, I made a wishlist.”
  • “Totally optional, but just in case — here’s what I’d really love.”
